I wanted to get Jessie a piano that would fit in our apartment, but at the same time fade into the background so she wouldn't feel pressured to play everyday. I couldn't find anything I liked so I looked into making one using an iPad as a sound source.
The iPad piano is essentially a repackaged MIDI keyboard and iPad interface taken apart and reassembled in a walnut enclosure. The interface allows the iPad to be connected using a single cable that handles data, sound, and power. To play it, you simply launch GarageBand (or any other iOS app like synths and piano emulators).
